According to The New York Times, several international refugee agencies expressed fear this week that Jordan had closed its border to Syrian refugees. Although the Jordanian government insists it has maintained an open-border policy, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) claimed that no Syrians had been brought from the border to refugee camps since October 1. Some experts suggest that Jordan’s involvement in the United States-led campaign against the Islamic State may have pushed the country to tighten its border with Syria, fearing terrorist reprisals. For Jordan to close its border to Syrian refugees would represent a dramatic restriction of movement: until last week, several hundred Syrian refugees crossed into Jordan each day.
