IRAP SUPPORTS THE PRESIDENT’S PROPOSED REFUGEE ADMISSIONS FOR FY17
FISHER: “IRAP is thrilled to see the President’s proposal to admit 110,000 refugees next year, showing an ambitious and expanded commitment to protect refugees.”
New York, NY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2016 – The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) at the Urban Justice Center welcomes and supports the recommendations for refugee resettlement as outlined in the Proposed Refugee Admissions for FY 17 Report to the Congress that was circulated yesterday.
The report proposes an increase of resettled refugees from 85,000 in fiscal year 2016 to 110,000, with the biggest increase set for refugees from the Middle East. With conflicts ongoing in Syria and other MENA nations, IRAP welcomes this demonstration of increased humanitarian leadership from the United States, which would bring relief to many vulnerable families. IRAP calls on the U.S. government to continue to expand its resettlement program and humanitarian assistance for refugees.
IRAP’s Policy Director, Betsy Fisher, commented: “IRAP is thrilled to see the President’s proposal to admit 110,000 refugees next year, showing an ambitious and expanded commitment to protect refugees. In the current refugee crisis, refugee resettlement provides the only opportunity for the most vulnerable refugees to reach safety.”
IRAP is also pleased to see that the Report emphasizes the importance of improved refugee processing to meet this increased resettlement goal, as well as the crucial contributions of private resources within U.S. refugee resettlement.
