IRAP STATEMENT ON TODAY’S SUPREME COURT DECISION ON DACA
(New York, NY) – Today, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in the landmark case, Department of Homeland Security v. Regents of the University of California, which is a series of consolidated cases from the lower courts that challenged the Trump Administration’s attempt to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The DACA program provides protection from deportation for undocumented individuals who were brought to the United States as children.
In a 5:4 ruling, the Court determined that the Administration’s termination of the DACA program was unlawful and that the program can continue for the time being, allowing more than 700,000 people, whose futures had been uncertain, to remain in the United States.
The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) welcomes today’s decision, which will bring relief to hundreds of thousands of people, who otherwise would have lost their ability to contribute to our nation’s economy and would have faced the risk of deportation, had the program been discontinued. In response to this ruling, IRAP’s Deputy Executive Director, Amy Taylor, stated:
“We are thrilled that the Supreme Court issued a decision on the right side of history today, and we commend the bravery of the many DACA recipients who helped propel this victory. Today justice has prevailed, but we recognize this victory does not bring relief to all members of immigrant communities who are suffering from the brutal attacks of this Administration, and the fight continues.”
