IRAP STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE UNITED STATES’ WITHDRAWAL FROM THE GLOBAL COMPACT ON MIGRATION
(New York, NY) – In response to yesterday’s announcement by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that the United States will withdraw from the United Nations’ Global Compact on Migration, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) at the Urban Justice Center issued the following statement:
“IRAP condemns the Administration’s decision to pull out of negotiations on the Global Compact on Migration. The Global Compact has the potential to provide a step forward in international refugee protection, and the United States’ failure to participate only diminishes its international stature and leadership. Contrary to the Administration’s statements, participating in global, voluntary institutions does not reduce national sovereignty—but it does boost international cooperation and capacity to benefit the world’s most vulnerable people.”
