IRAP is thrilled to share the news that the State Department has restarted refugee processing in Iraq, after a suspension of nearly a year. Politico broke the news this weekend, with an article that features IRAP and our current lawsuit on behalf of nine Iraqis who have waited years for decisions on their Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) applications.
IRAP welcomes the lifting of the suspension. With 57,000 Iraqis in the backlog of applicants, it is critical that the State Department work proactively to maximize capacity on the ground in Iraq moving forward. We’re encouraged by the government’s commitment to increasing the size of staff in Baghdad in order to achieve this.
