A New York Times Report published earlier today confirmed that the United States has launched airstrikes on at least two cities in Kurdish territory, where ISIS has cornered tens of thousands of ethnic and religious minorities. The cities, Gwer and Mahmour, had been seized very recently by the Sunni insurgency, and though the success of the bombing campaigns has yet to be seen, it is likely that the magnitude of the attack, along with the realization that the U.S. military is now involved in the conflict, will be enough to drive back ISIS, at least for the time being. President Obama’s decision to use military force will without question be both panned and praised in the media, but one thing is certain: the crisis in Iraq has reached a point where even government analysts have determined that it needs to be stopped as soon as possible.
