IRAP STATEMENT ON REPORTS SUGGESTING LOWEST REFUGEE ADMISSIONS NUMBER EVER FOR NEXT FISCAL YEAR
(New York, NY) – Recent news reports suggest that the Trump administration is mulling reducing the refugee admissions number for next fiscal year to the lowest in history. In Fiscal Year 2018, Trump set the number of refugees to be admitted at 45,000, already a historic low. According to the reports, the number for the next year may be set even lower, at 25,000 or less. In response to this concerning news, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) issued the following statement:
“IRAP strongly condemns any attempt to further reduce the number of refugees welcomed to the United States. The recent cuts to refugee resettlement, and the ongoing delays in refugee processing, are already abandoning thousands of refugees in urgent need of a safe place to live. Many of our clients — children with medical emergencies, Iraqis under threat for having worked with the U.S., and LGBTI refugees living in hiding — don’t have time to wait. Dismantling the U.S. resettlement program could mean a death sentence for them.
Americans all over the country support welcoming refugees, and have voiced the need to admit at least 75,000 next fiscal year. Instead of pursuing an unprecedented hardline to the refugee program, the Administration should listen to the majority of Americans who agree that the U.S. is better when we welcome refugees.”
