IRAP OPPOSES NEW IMMIGRATION RESTRICTIONS EXPANDING THE MUSLIM BAN
(New York, NY) – Today, the Trump Administration amended the travel ban executive order, also known as the Muslim ban, expanding it to six more countries. In response to the expansion announced three years after the original Muslim ban executive order, a version of which remains in effect to this day, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) issued the following statement by IRAP’s Litigation Director, Mariko Hirose:
“IRAP has been at the forefront of challenging the Trump Administration’s bigoted immigration policies since the first executive order three years ago, and we’ve seen the heart-breaking impact they have had. This dramatic expansion of the ban is simply sadistic. It will result in more suffering for untold numbers of families who will be prevented from reuniting.
For years now, the Muslim ban has prevented hundreds of thousands of people from reuniting with family, studying in the U.S., seeking medical assistance, and many other activities, simply because of their nationality. And now, this Administration has visited this fate on many more families, workers, and others.
According to the announcement, many of our clients, who are in extremely vulnerable situations, will once again be harmed by this order, among them Eritrean children trying to reunite with their family members in the United States. And once again, the Administration has failed to provide any proof of the legitimacy of its harmful actions.”
IRAP will continue to fight the Muslim ban in court and calls on Congress to ratify the No Ban Act to rescind this shameful ban once and for all.
