Today, The Washington Free Beacon broke the news of the murder of Sakhidad Afghan, an Afghan interpreter for the U.S. Marines and Air Force. Afghan was tortured and killed earlier this year by insurgents. Tragically, he had applied for a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) four years ago, and was still waiting on a decision when the Taliban kidnapped and murdered him.
This incident is a grim reminder that the United States cannot afford to delay decisions in the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) process. America’s Iraqi and Afghan allies are targeted in their home countries precisely because of their loyalty to the United States, and face very real threats to their lives.
“This horrifying incident is unfortunately just one example of how each passing day is another mortal threat to our Iraqi and Afghan allies,” IRAP’s National Policy Director, Katie Reisner, told The Washington Free Beacon. “It is a call to action for the Departments of State and Homeland Security to act justly and expeditiously on all SIV applications.”
IRAP continues to advocate on behalf of U.S. allies in Iraq and Afghanistan for a more efficient SIV application process. Through our current lawsuit against the U.S. government, we hope to ensure that applicants wait no more than nine months for a decision.
