In a piece on ForeignPolicy.com, Chris Ulack said the Arab Spring has put Iraqi refugees in Syria “between a rock and a hard place.” Thousands of Iraqis fled instability in their home country to seek shelter in neighbors such as Syria and Libya, but uprisings in those nations have now displaced their own citizens. According to Ulack, Iraqi refugees are left with the choice of returning to a still volatile Iraq or competing with thousands of Syrians and Libyans for limited aid.
Ulack recommended the United States’ government focus on ending the spiraling refugee crisis instead of the war in Libya. He suggested some of the $33 billion in frozen Libyan assets goes to refugee assistance.
