An Al Jazeera story published earlier today discusses Afghan interpreters currently protesting outside the US embassy in Kabul. Many of the interpreters worked with the US military in the southern Helmand and Kandahar provinces of Afghanistan, and expected to obtain visas to the US as part of the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program if they demonstrated their service to the US and that they had been under threat. But severe backlogs in the SIV process have left a large number of interpreters stranded with their families, endangered in Afghanistan. As American troops draw down, these young Afghans continue to wait for visas to materialize.
