Today, the entire international community came together to celebrate World Refugee Day, an annual event intended to recognize the incredible courage of all those forced to escape their home countries.
World Refugee Day 2015 arrived only two days after the United Nations announced a new record high number of displaced people worldwide: 60 million individuals globally have now been forced to flee their homes due to conflict. Today, we’re facing the worst refugee crisis since World War II.
IRAP began celebrating World Refugee Day on Thursday, when we hosted a live Twitter Chat with experts from a number of leading refugee assistance organizations. Participants included CWS, Jesuit Refugee Services, Episcopal Migration Ministries, HIAS, Refugee Council USA, and the Ethiopian Community Development Council. If you weren’t able to make the chat on Thursday, you can check out the #RefugeeChat tagboard here, and can check out our Storify story here and below.
There are many ways to get involved with World Refugee Day in your community. Don’t miss local events in your area – a thorough list is available from UNHCR here – and please join us in celebrating today!
