World Refugee Day is coming up, on Friday, June 20!
First observed in 2001, World Refugee Day was created by the United Nations General Assembly with the express purpose of raising awareness about the increasing number of refugees and internally displaced persons around the world. Since then, the day has been marked another 12 times, and has often carried a special refugee-related theme. This year’s theme is a continuation of the UNHCR’s global “1 Campaign,” which emphasizes that “One family torn apart by war is too many.”
Now, in light of the Syrian and Iraqi refugee crises, it is more important than ever to recognize the responsibilities we have to the refugees of the world. Without our help, war, tyranny, and ethnic conflict will continue to affect hundreds of thousands of innocent people across the globe. This is the most urgent story of our time.
