IRAP JOINS AMICUS BRIEF IN SUPPORT OF ASYLUM SEEKERS AT THE U.S. SOUTHERN BORDER
(New York, NY) – Yesterday, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) at the Urban Justice Center joined a motion seeking leave to file an amici curiae brief of 23 organizations serving asylum seekers in support of the plaintiffs in East Bay Sanctuary Covenant v. Trump. The lawsuit challenges the Trump Administration’s recent proclamation banning asylum seekers from being eligible to claim asylum in the United States, unless they cross the U.S. border at an official port of entry.
The brief argues that this most recent proclamation is another policy driven by discriminatory animus towards asylum seekers and other vulnerable people exercising their rights in order to enter the United States. Like the Muslim ban and the refugee ban before it, this policy restricts the rights of individuals from other countries for reasons that are not based in fact, as the brief outlines in detail.
Thus, the brief summarizes that the President and his Administration “have repeatedly suggested, without evidence and in direct conflict with the available data, that undocumented immigrants are a source of violence in order to depart from long-standing principles of law, discriminate against vulnerable populations, and bring life to an unfounded animus toward asylum seekers.”
As a legal aid organization protecting the rights of displaced people, IRAP condemns the Trump Administration’s policy that will harm vulnerable families in search of safety and supports the issuance of a preliminary injunction that would halt its implementation.
